Not sure what to find out when visiting a new child care center?

Ask these five questions to decide if the place is right for you and your child.

1.) What is the child to adult ratio?
Check with your State to find out what their mandatory ratio is, and compare it with the center’s ratio. Obviously, the lower the ratio, the more attention each child should be getting.

Canaan Land’s ratio:
Infant to 2 1/2 years old= 4 children: 1 Adult
2 1/2 to 13 years old= 10 children: 1 Adult

2.)What is your discipline policy?
Canaan Land’s policy is one minute per year of age. Repeat offenders are separated from the other children if they are a physical threat. If a child continues to be a threat, then he/she will be sent to the Director’s office and will spend time there until he/she is able to function in a multiple child setting.

3.) What is your staff turn-over like?
Child care is not a lucrative career–especially for those who will be in the most contact with your children–the teachers and assistants. If a center can’t keep staff, you may want to consider taking your child elsewhere, since it’s sometimes difficult for children to adjust to different people.
Canaan Land’s turn-over rate is extremely low. Most of our teachers have been here for many years. Longevity is normal for Canaan Land staff.

4.) What is your sick-child policy?
Centers vary on this subject. While some centers may be equipped to care for a mildly sick child, others may call for someone to pick up the child at the slightest symptoms. Know ahead of time so that you can make arrangements for the time that call does come in.
Canaan Land calls a parent or other authorized person to pick up a child if the child has a temperature above 100º F; has had more than three bouts of diarrhea; has had a major accident at the center; has symptoms of a common childhood disease such as Chicken Pox or Pink Eye; has other unusual sickness such as severe dizziness, vomiting, etc.

5.) How much time is free play?
While you don’t want to be spending your money on your child coming to play idly all day, you also don’t want him/her to have no free time. A quality schedule will have a good mix in both the afternoon and morning.
Canaan Land offers free time upon early arrivals, before and after each meal and at the end of the day. We also include gym during the week and outside recess twice daily (weather permitting). Free-time is also offered after early finishing of assigned subjects such as Science, Language, etc.
